Common Sense Tips to Avoid Exercise Injuries
Posted: May 10, 2016
So you’ve decided to finally get up off that couch, huh?, but, and end up back on the couch.
I am an avid runner. I’ve run three half marathons and several 10k’s and 5k’s. When I first began running, I used the Jeff Galloway Method and still do to this day. Jeff Galloway, 70, still uses this method himself and he’s been running his entire life. It’s a run/walk method that is easy to follow and will have you up and running in no time.
Probably the most important parts of any exercise program are a proper warm up and cool down. Each should last about 5 minutes. For example, if you’re going out for a run, walk for about 5 minutes to warm up those muscles. Repeat at the end of your run as well, along with some stretching. Other ways to avoid injuries, particularly in the gym, know how to use equipment and know proper form when performing certain exercises. If possible, seek the help of a trainer in the beginning. The payoff will be huge in the end. Most importantly, start slow and don’t overdo it. You’re only five steps away from a healthier lifestyle. You don’t want to end up back on that couch.
Also, if you’re interested in a beginner’s running program, Runner’s World Magazine offers a great 8-Week Getting Started Program. I found a number of the programs in this magazine extremely helpful. You won’t be running a marathon tomorrow, but a healthier you is in your future. Just get up off that couch!
